General Admission Requirements

Faculty of Commerce

Candidates having attained the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with a Senior Certificate with a minimum of 40% in at least four higher or standard grade subjects, at least three of which shall have been passed simultaneously and one of which shall be a recognised higher grade subject; OR Candidates must have attained the age of 45 before or during the first year of registration. A USAF Exemption Certificate is required
other qualifications
  • If discipline is not cognate at least 20% of credits must be academic literacy or numeracy related. you have a valid study visa issued in the name of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) that covers the duration of your studies.
School of Tomorrow (SOT) (last date of achievement 30 June 2019)
  • Candidates who have successfully completed a SOT qualification may be conditionally admitted directly into the 1st year of the degree, provided that they have: a) submitted their SOT certificate along with a statement of results and have achieved at least 50 % in 4 recognised 20-credit NSC subjects – using the SOT National Conversion Table; b) achieved the following for the National Benchmark Tests (NBT)- AQL: – Academic Literacy (AL) score of at least 51 AND a Quantitative Literacy (QL) score of at least 38 An USAf Exemption Certificate is required – the Office of the Registrar will facilitate, on behalf of the student, an application for a degree exemption certificate to USAf, once the student has provided proof of payment to USAf.

HIGHER CERTIFICATE
  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Higher Certificate admission- A minimum of 30 % for English is required; OR
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) NC(V) with Higher Certificate admission – A minimum of 40 % in English on either First Additional Language or Home Language level,  with a minimum of 30 % in either Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy, a minimum of 40% in Life Orientation and a minimum of 50% in four vocational subjects; OR
  • A Senior Certificate (SC)  (without endorsement) or equivalent– A minimum of five of the six required subjects must be passed.
School of Tomorrow (SOT) (last date of achievement 30 June 2019)

Candidates who have successfully completed a SOT qualification may be admitted, provided that they have submitted their SOT Certificate and Academic Transcript as well as their NBT:
AQL results and have achieved:

  • 40% in 3 subjects, one of which is an official language at Home Language level AND 30 % in 3 subjects of which one must be for English – using the SOT Conversion Table; and
  • A score of at least 37 for Academic Literacy (AL) and a score of at least 37 for Quantitative Literacy (QL)
DIPLOMA
  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Diploma admission- A minimum of 30 % for English coupled with a minimum of 40% for four x 20 credit subjects is required; OR
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) NC(V) with Diploma admission – A minimum of 50 % in English on either First Additional Language or Home Language level AND Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy AND Life Orientation – a minimum of 60% in the three compulsory and 50% in one vocational subjects is required; OR
  • A Senior Certificate (SC) (without endorsement) or equivalent– A minimum of five of the required six subjects must be passed; OR
  • Alternatively, a Higher Certificate (or equivalent) or Advanced Certificate in a cognate field may satisfy the minimum admission requirements for diploma

Faculty of Information and Communications Technology

DEGREE
  • A  National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Degree admission- A minimum of 30 % for English coupled with a minimum of 50% for four x DESIGNATED NSC subjects (This excludes LO which is a 10 credit subject); OR
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) NC(V) with Degree admission – A minimum of 60 % in English on either First Additional Language or Home Language level AND Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy AND Life Orientation, with a minimum of 70% in the  four  vocational subjects is required;  OR
  • A Senior Certificate (SC) (with endorsement) or equivalent  is required; OR
  • Alternatively, a Higher Certificate, an Advanced Certificate, 240 or 360-credit Diploma in a cognate field may satisfy the minimum admission requirements to degree studies

Mature Age Exemption:

You need to have met the additional requirements as stipulated below:

  • For the Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching and the Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching:
  • The degree is delivered in English and this is known as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT) in the BEd degree.  All applicants must have achieved a minimum of 50% in English on their NSC/ SC/ equivalent qualification – whether as a Home Language (HL)* or First Additional Language (FAL) **

In addition

  • All applicants to the BEd programmes must have obtained at least a Level 3 (40%) at the NSC or equivalent level, as an HL or FAL,  in the language, they are seeking to study as a FAL in the BEd OR
  • Must demonstrate language proficiency (LP) *** in the selected FAL BEd language/s. To be admitted via this option, candidates are required to pass a language proficiency test in the relevant language/s

DIPLOMA
  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Diploma admission- A minimum of 30 % for English coupled with a minimum of 40% for four x 20 credit subjects is required; OR
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) NC(V) with Diploma admission – A minimum of 50 % in English on either First Additional Language or Home Language level AND Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy AND Life Orientation – a minimum of 60% in the three compulsory and 50% in one vocational subjects is required; OR
