2. Staff Astronomer Principal Tasks
  • The staff astronomer’s primary duty is to direct and carry out original research that aligns with one or more of the SAAO’s priority areas.
  • The ideal applicant will use ground-based and space-based near-infrared observations as the cornerstone of their research program and may have experience in creating or supporting near-infrared instrumentation.
  • The operational responsibilities at the SAAO and research (including postgraduate student supervision and staff development) will be split 50/50 among the staff astronomer.
  • These responsibilities could involve managing data and telescopes, supporting instruments, supporting observations, or creating new devices.
  • Every astronomer is stationed in Cape Town, with occasional trips to Sutherland.

Experience at Work

  • Ph.D. in astronomy or a closely related discipline

Knowledge

  • Infrared astronomy from the ground
  • Ground-based infrared astronomy equipment
  • Understanding of methods for working with spectrally and spatially resolved near-infrared data

Ability

  • Must be able to show leadership abilities in an academic or scientific setting.
  • Must be able to collaborate across disciplines, as is customary in a research and development environment.
