Before you can gain admission into UJ as an international student, you must meet the school requirements and get a Visa that will permit you to study in the institution.

In this post, we will provide you with detailed information about the UJ international students’ admission requirements.

International Applicants Admission Requirements

Before you can be given admission as an international student, you have to meet both the UJ and the faculty you are applying to admission requirements. Below are the admission requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate studies for international students:

UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS

APPLICATION AND CLOSING DATE

The UJ application portal will open for international students on 01 April of the preceding year you intend to study and closes on 31 October at 12:00 noon. You can apply online using the UJ admission application portal, if you have any problem during your application you can send a mail to [email protected].

Please Note: Don’t send cash through the mail or leave documents and cash with any unauthorised persons.

ALL INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS ARE TO TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING:

All international students are to take note of the followings:

• Submit a completed admission application form together with supporting documents and a non-refundable application fee of R200.00
• Online applications are free
• You can upload your supporting documents on the online application platform or email to [email protected]
• Final School leaving results when applying with international credentials or currently in Grade 12 (Final Grade 11 results)
• Valid Passport or Identity Document or Birth Certificate
• Sworn English Translation of documents (Documents issued in any language other than English)
• Provide proof of the English Proficiency where English was not used as a medium of learning and teaching (the University prefers the applicant to take the IELTS at an overall score of 6 and TOEFL at an average score of 80–104 for Undergraduate programmes) Alternatively, you may elect to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP). Should you choose to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP), Mr Malibongwe Masango will be the contact person for UJELP. • In the case where both first and second choices were unsuccessful, the International Admissions Office will offer an international applicant an alternative choice option when meeting the requirements
• Should you require on-campus accommodation, please submit a completed residence application form at the same time you apply to study at UJ

If you are attending or have attended a university within or outside the Republic of South Africa you are required to submit an academic transcript that covers the period of study, especially if they intend on being granted exemption from modules or courses at the University.

Degree-seeking students

To study in South Africa, international students that want to apply for a degree programme must have achieved a South African National Senior Certificate with a degree endorsement.

If you obtain a high school qualification outside South Africa, you are to present a certificate of exemption from the Matriculation Board of South Africa for admission into undergraduate studies.

Below are the supporting documents all international students must attach a copy of the following certified documents with their application form:

• Form M30 (you can download this on the Matriculation Board website https://mb.usaf.ac.za)
• Copies of the applicant’s educational qualifications certified by a South African High Commission,
• Consulate, Trade Mission or a Public Notary in your home country
• A copy of your passport or birth certificate certified by a South African High Commission, Consulate,
• Trade Mission or a Public Notary in your home country
• Sworn English Translation of documents (Documents issued in any language other than English)
• Exemption fee as determined by the Matriculation Board (see website https://mb.usaf.ac.za)
• Submit proof of payment for the Exemption fee of R562 payable to the banking details below

If you are from DR Congo and Congo Brazzaville, you are to apply for Matriculation Exemption directly with the Matriculation Board. Applicants should submit all certified copies of the required documents during the hardcopy application or email them after the online application.

Kindly attach a copy of your school-leaving results with your application to help the university calculate the Admission Points System which is used in issuing admission.

TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRAMMES (DIPLOMA, CERTIFICATE)

If you are applying for Certificates or Diploma qualifications you can apply directly to the university without an Exemption Application or Certificate.

POSTGRADUATE APPLICANTS

You can either apply on the UJ application portal or download the UJ application form and submit it to the Student Enrolment Centre or mailed to the University.

The online application is free while those that apply through hardcopy will pay a non-refundable application fee of R200.

• If you are a current student still to complete a pre-requisite qualification or your Final academic transcript if studies have been completed.

• Provide proof of the English Proficiency where English was not used as a medium of lecturing (the University prefers the applicant to take the IELTS at an overall score of 7 and TOEFL at an average score of 105–120 for Postgraduate programmes) Alternatively, you may elect to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP). Should you choose to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP), Mr Malibongwe Masango will be the contact person for UJELP. UNIVERSITY FEES

UJ fees do increase between 5 and 10 per cent per year, make sure you obtain the fees structure for the next academic year. All admitted international students are required by the Department of Home Affairs to provide proof of availability of funds for the full tuition fee of the academic year and proof of Medical Aid administered in South Africa paid for a full academic year of study prior to receiving their study visa.

Privately (i.e. Self, Parent/s or Guardian) funded international students are required to pay their tuition and residence fees (on-campus residences) as follows:

• An upfront payment of 30% of tuition and residence fees must be paid before or at registration.
• 35% of the tuition and residence fees to be paid by 30 April.
• 35% of the tuition and residence fees to be paid by 31 July.

The University will offer a 5% discount should the full fees be paid before or at registration.

International levy 2022

Below is the levy applicants are to pay in line with the above fees structure. The levies are a non-refundable international levy, registration fee and ICT levy. This levy will expire on December 31 of each year.

• SADC- and other African Countries – (Postgraduate, Undergraduate, Full time, Part-time) – R2 000-00
• Other countries – R17 000.00
• Occasional and Non-degree purposes/practical training – R8 000.00
• Asylum Seeker/Refugees/Permanent Residence and Exchange students – NONE
• Non-subsidised courses – R1 000.00

International levies for the year 2022 will be published prior to registration.
