The management of the SAAFoST Brian Koeppen Memorial Scholarship is calling on all eligible South African students to take part in the ongoing scholarship program for the 2022 academic session.

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is the association of food science, technology and other professionals serving South Africa’s food and allied industries.

The aim of the organization is to increase knowledge of food science and technology through research, membership magazine publication, workshops, exhibitions, meetings, seminars and assisting in educational activities.

SAAFoST is a non-profit organization and is run by volunteers with around 2000 members across Southern Africa. It also has a foundation that is responsible for the administration of SAAFoST academic bursaries, awards and prizes.

ABOUT THE SAAFOST BRIAN KOEPPEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – FIELDS COVERED

The SAAFoST scholarship was formed to honour late Professor B H Koeppen, who was the Head of the Department of Food Science at Stellenbosch University.

This grant is available for students in Food Science and Food Technology Fields (BSc Hons or B-Tech). The grant will provide funding for these departments, at the following institutions:

  • Departments of Food Science at University of Stellenbosch, University of Pretoria, University of Venda and University of the Free State
  • Departments of Food Technology a the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, Tshwane University of Technology and University of Johannesburg

SAAFOST BRIAN KOEPPEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – COVERAGE VALUE

This scholarship will be awarded to two postgraduate students; one for a Master’s student and one for a Doctorate degree. The value of the bursary is R35 000 each, per annum to take care of the student’s tuition fees.

In a situation where a recipient is a beneficiary of another bursary that covers tuition fees either partial or full, the scholarship will be used for study materials, academic conferences, study visits and research.

SAAFOST BRIAN KOEPPEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Below are the eligibility requirements for the SAAFoST Brian Koeppen Memorial Scholarship. All applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Open to South African citizen OR a permanent resident of South Africa
  • Be a member of SAAFoST for at least one year before applying for the scholarship
  • You must be registered at any of the above institutions, for any of the above postgraduate programmes, for a minimum of 1 year before you are nominated for this scholarship

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SAAFOST BRIAN KOEPPEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The application for this grant must be done by the approved tertiary institution only, students cannot apply for the bursary themselves.

The Head of the accredited department must nominate or recommend candidates who are worthy of the award based on academic excellence and financial need. Only one candidate will be nominated from each institution.

The following documents must be attached to the application form. It is compulsory for all candidates to attach all the below documents for them to qualify.

  • Proof of SAAFoST membership
  • Nominees’ ID document or proof of permanent residence status
  • Proof of registration at one of the approved institutions
  • Nominees’ complete academic record of a previously completed degree
  • Project proposal of research to be undertaken
  • Approved progress report of the research work conducted during the 2021 academic year
  • Proof of any other bursary or financial support being received
