International students that want to study at the University of Johannesburg can apply to the institution after meeting the necessary requirements. Before any international student can be given admission, he/she must meet the requirements stipulated by the Immigration Act No 13 of 2002. UJ is one of the best universities in Africa and they offer very quality education to students.
This post will provide you with all the requirements you need to study at the University of Johannesburg.
UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS
APPLICATION AND CLOSING DATE
The University of Johannesburg application normally opens on 1 April of the year preceding the year of intended study and closes on 28 September of the same year at 12:00 noon. You have two modes of application, you can apply through www.uj.ac.za/apply and follow a link to study @UJ to apply online or you can download the application form, which should be submitted to the Student Enrolment Centre or be mailed to the University. Online application does not attract any payment for the application but applying through hardcopy is going to cost you are non-refundable fee of R200.
No applicant should send cash through the mail or leave his/her documents and cash with an unauthorized individual.
DOCUMENTS NEEDED FOR UJ APPLICATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
All international students should take note of the following while applying to UJ:
- Submit a completed application form and all supporting documents
- A final School results
- Valid Passport or Identity Document or Birth Certificate
- Sworn English Translation of documents (For documents issued in any language other than English)
- Proof of payment of a non-refundable Application Fee of R200.00
- Evidence of English Proficiency is required where English is not the medium of teaching and learning ( UJ accept IELTS with a score of 6 and TOEFL with an average score of 80-104 for the undergraduate programme). Alternatively, you can write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP). - In a case where the first and second choices are not successful, the International Admissions Office will offer an international applicant an alternative choice option when meeting the requirements
- You are to submit a completed application form for on-campus residence when required
Applicants that have attended a university of attending a university within or outside South Africa should submit an academic transcript that covers the period of their study. This is necessary if the applicant intends to get an exemption from modules or courses at the University.
Degree-seeking students
To study a degree programme in South Africa, applicants must have completed a South Africa National Senior Certificate with a degree endorsement. International applicants with high school qualifications outside the Republic of South Africa should get a certificate of exemption from the Matriculation Board of South Africa for admission into SA undergraduate studies. Applicants should submit the below documents to the Matriculation Board at the address provided below;
- Form M30 (you can download this form on the Matriculation Board website www.he-enrol.ac.za)
- A certified copy of the applicant’s education qualification that is certified by a South African High Commission, Consulate, Trade Mission or a Public Notary in the applicant’s home country
- Certified copy of applicants passport or birth certificate certified by a South African High Commission, Consulate, Trade Mission or a Public Notary in applicant’s home country
- A sworn English translation of documents (For documents that are not issued in the English language)
- Exemption fee as determined by the Matriculation Board ( see website www.he-enrol.ac.za)
- A proof of the payment of the Exemption fee of R500 payable to the banking details below

Each faculty in UJ have their own APS ( Admission Points System) for accepting applicants. Applicants are expected to submit a copy of their school-leaving result and/or academic record if they have studied at UJ.

If you are applying for Certificates or Diploma qualifications you can apply to the university directly without an Exemption Application or Certificate.

UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG TUITION FEES
UJ fees generally increase by 5 and 10 per cent every year, contact the University in November to obtain the final fees for the academic year.
Please Note: The Department of Home Affairs requires all accepted International applicants to provide proof of available funds for the full tuition fee of the academic year and a Medical Aid proof administered in South Africa that is paid for a full academic year of study before receiving the study visa.
All privately (i.e. Self, Parent/s or Guardian) funded international students must pay their tuition and residence fees (on-campus residences) as follows:
- 30% upfront payment of tuition and residence fees must be paid before or at registration.
- Applicant must pay 35% of the tuition and residence fees by 30 April.
- 35% of the tuition fee and residence fees should be paid by 31 July.
A 5% discount will be given to those that pay full tuition fees before or at registration. The international levies for the 2023 academic years will be published before registration.
