Master of Science in Sustainability Schlarship

Application is now open for postgraduates to apply for the United Nations University Master of Science in Sustainability Scholarship. The programme details and requirements will be shared below.

The Master of Science n Sustainability scholarship programme is going to take place for a period of two years to provide beneficiaries will detailed knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute to solving sustainability challenges.

This Master of Science in Sustainability Scholarship Programme is aimed at recent graduates, professionals and practitioners who seek to contribute to the progress of government work, civil society, private sector and /or the UN and the international organizations.

This programme uses an innovative, interdisciplinary approach. It integrates methods and resources from the natural and social sciences, and humanities as well.

Master of Science in Sustainability Schlarship

Master of Science in Sustainability Programme uses UNs strong research record and capacity development, it also makes use of the UN network of scholars and academic institutions taking part in UN research.

This is practice-oriented, user-focused and the highest academic. Beneficiaries will have the opportunity to relate with leading scholars and policymakers through lectures, workshops and international conferences.

The United Nations University Master of Science in Sustainability Programme will start in September and all students are expected to meet the course requirements and obtain at least 30 credits by July.

Beneficiaries have the opportunity to offer UNU-IAS courses and also take courses at other leading universities in Japan like the University of Tokyo, International Christian University, Sophia University, and Yokohama National University.

Scholarship Coverage

The United Nation’s Master of Science in Sustainability scholarship Programme will provide a monthly allowance of 120,000 JPY* as living expenses for a maximum of 24 months. The beneficiary is not going to pay tuition fees as it is waived.

However, students will be responsible for the travel cost, visa fees and health/accident insurance.

Master of Science in Sustainability Requirements

Applicants that want to apply for the Master of Science in Sustainability must meet up the basic requirements to be considered for the programme.

Those that want to attend the double degree programme of UNU-IAS and the University of Tokyo (Department of Urban Engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering) must have been shortlisted by the University of Tokyo before they submit their application to UNU-IAS.

Below are the requirements students must meet:

  • Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a recognised university or higher institution in a field of study related to sustainability. If you are expected to receive your bachelor’s degree or equivalents before September 2022 which is the entrance period, you can also apply.
  • Applicants must have a GPA of 2.8 or above on a 4.0 scale (equivalent to 70% on a 100 % scale).
  • English language proficiency. Please see the section below for more details.

English Language Requirements

Below are the minimum English Language Requirements for the Master of Science in Sustainability  by UNU-IAS are:

  • 600 on TOEFL – Paper-Based Testing (PBT) OR
  • 100 on TOEFL – Internet-Based Testing (IBT) OR
  • 7.0 on IELTS – Academic format

The closing date for the Master of Science in Sustainability is February 21st 2022.
