Application is open for the University of South Africa, Unisa Postgraduate Bursary 2022. The bursary details and the application process are below.
UNISA is inviting all eligible Postgraduate students to apply for the ongoing bursary programme for the 2022 academic calendar. The bursary is available for the following postgraduate programme in all fields of study in the university:
- Doctoral qualification
- Honours qualification
- Master’s qualification
- Postgraduate Diploma
Bursary Coverage
The Unisa Postgraduate bursary will cater for the following expenses of beneficiaries. The bursary coverage depends on the postgraduate applied for, see details below:
- Postgraduate Diploma and Honours bursary: Beneficiary in this programme will only be funded with tuition fees
- Master’s degree by research and experimental research bursary: Beneficiaries are entitled to tuition fees and research essentials (estimated at R55 000) for the first 3 years of study
- Master’s degree by coursework bursary: Beneficiary tuition fees and research essentials (estimated at R25 000) will be paid for the first 2 consecutive years of their study
- Doctoral degree by research bursary: Recipients tuition fees and research essentials (estimated at R80 000) will be paid for the first 4 consecutive years of study
- Doctoral degree by experimental research bursary: Recipients tuition fees and research essentials (estimated at R120 000) will be paid for the first 4 consecutive years of study
In partnership with the Division of Student Funding, the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) manages the postgraduate bursary through the Postgraduate Bursaries Administration.
The amount awarded to successful applicants will be decided by both the CGS Postgraduate bursaries Administration and the Division of Student Funding (DSF).

Requirements for Unisa Postgraduate Bursary
To be considered for this bursary, applicants must meet some minimum requirements to be considered for the postgraduate bursary. If you did not submit all the requirements you will not be considered for Unisa Postgraduate Bursary.
Postgraduate Diploma and Honours bursary:
Below are the requirements for the Diploma and Honour programme:
- South African citizen
- Must have finished an undergraduate degree programme not later than 31 January 2022
- Applicants must have an academic achievement of 60% or above in their undergraduate degree
- Must be registered to study at Unisa by 28 February 2022
- Intending to study a Postgraduate Diploma or Honours qualification at Unisa in 2022
- You must NOT hold any postgraduate degree at the same level or a higher level
- Not currently registered for a special study programme (certificates and non-degrees)
- Not a permanent staff member at Unisa
Masters and Doctoral bursary:
- Open to all South African citizens and international students, but preference will be given to South African students (in ratio 80:20)
- Applicants should have completed their Research Proposal Module by no later than 31 January 2022, if applying for the M&D research
- Applicants should have completed their Honours or Postgraduate Diploma qualification by no later than 31 January 2022, if applying for Master’s by Coursework
- Temporarily registered to study at Unisa by 28 February 2022
- Applicants intending to study towards a Master’s or Doctoral qualification at Unisa in 2022
- Not a holder of a postgraduate degree at the same level or a higher level
- You must NOT be registering for a special study programme (certificates and non-degrees)
- Not open to a permanent staff member at Unisa

2) Fill the application form completely with the right information. You can fill the form with your smartphone, computer or tablet.

NOTES ABOUT THE UNISA BURSARIES
Postgraduate Diploma and Honours bursary notes:
- The bursary will NOT take care of failed modules in your Postgraduate Diploma or Honours degree.
- Bursaries will be awarded based on fund availability and will be awarded to students from highest-performing to the lowest-performing.
- Bursaries will be awarded to students for 2 consecutive years of study only. Students will have to apply the following year to be funded if they meet the minimum 60% requirements.
- Applicants can submit appeal with their motivation, between 1 and 15 April 2022 – it can submitted through email to the Postgraduate Bursaries Administration at: [email protected].
- Appeals will NOT be considered if there are insufficient funds available or the applicant has been a bursary beneficiary for the full years of the bursary.
- Bursary award will be terminated if students did not follow the bursary rules and testimonial.
Masters and Doctoral bursary notes:
- The bursary will be awarded subject to submission of a satisfactory academic progress report from your supervisor(s) (Section C of the application form).
- Bursaries will be awarded only for the first 2, 3 or 4 consecutive years of study. Students will have to apply the following year to be funded if they meet the minimum 60% requirements.
- Bursaries will be awarded subject due to fund availability.
- Applicants can submit appeal with their motivation, between 1 and 15 April 2022 – it can submitted through email to the Postgraduate Bursaries Administration at: [email protected].
- Appeals will NOT be considered if there are insufficient funds available or the applicant has been a bursary beneficiary for the full years of the bursary.
- Bursary award will be terminated if students did not follow the bursary rules and testimonial.
