SOLTRAIN (Southern African Solar Thermal Training and Demonstration Initiative), established in 2009, was a regional program on capacity building and demonstration of solar thermal systems in the SADC region.

Funded by the Austrian Development Agency and OFID, SOLTRAIN’s aim is to give support in order to enable targeted countries to divert from the majority fossil energy supply system, to a sustainable supply structure based majorly on solar thermal and renewable energy.

In South Africa, SOLTRAIN’s local partners are:

  • SANEDI (South African National Energy Development Insitute).
  • Stellenbosch University’s CRSES (Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies).
