The amount given to the recipients of the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award depends on the recipient’s financial need. This financial need is determined by totalling tuition, fees, living costs, and the financial contribution you and your family can make each year. The need assessment will be done using the financial information provided by you and your family.

Recipients can renew their award up to three additional years of their undergraduate or till they complete their undergraduate degree programme – whichever comes first, provided the recipients meet the academic requirements in their faculty, demonstrate financial need and maintain their Canadian study permit (student visa).

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants that want to apply for the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award must meet the following requirements:

  • Open to all international students who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian study permit.
  • Applicants entering UBC must be from a recognized secondary school or transferring from their first year at a post-secondary college or another university.
  • You must have graduated from high school no earlier than the month of June two years prior to the academic year you are applying. For example, applicants for 2022 must have graduated from high school no earlier than June 2020.
  • Applying for your first undergraduate degree.
  • Applicants with superior academic achievement (achieve all As or equivalent standards).
  • You must demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent you from pursuing a UBC degree.
  • You must meet UBC’s admission requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and the English Language Admission Standard.
  • You must meet the UBC English Language Admission Requirement by 31 January.

Application Process

The application for 2022 is closed but the 2023 application will open soon. We advise all interested applicants to stay alert to start their application on time.

The application process is through nomination, you must be nominated by your school or a non-profit, and also submit a reference from an academic referee.

After you have been nominated and get your reference ready, submit your application by completing the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award online application form to get admission into UBC by the 15th of November.
