The International Space Weather Camp Application

Students from the following countries are given amazing opportunities by The International Space Weather Camp 2022 (ISWC) to learn about space weather:

• South Africa
• The United States of America, and
• Germany

Majorly, space weather is a moderately new and exciting field involving the study of the Sun and its influence on space and the Earth’s upper atmosphere as well as the impacts of solar events on space and ground-based technological systems that modern society relies on daily.

The Sansa International Space Weather Camp (ISWC) consists of a series of lectures, hands-on projects and other interesting activities.

The lecture subject matter covers various aspects related to Space Weather, comprising:

• Cosmic-ray particle transport theory
• Plasma physics
• Solar physics
• Heliospheric physics
• Computer simulations for modelling and understanding local Space Weather.
• The impacts on Earth’s atmosphere, satellites, and space.

The Sansa International Space Weather Camp (ISWC) will take place in two parts:

1.  From 1st – 15th June 2022, the first part will take place virtually due to COVID-19 health risks and travel restrictions.
2. In July 2022, the second part will be held at the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) Hermanus facility for the South African students who successfully completed the first part of the camp.

Students get to interact, connect and engage freely with students and researchers from around the world, courtesy of the platform provided by the ISWC. During the Camp, students will also benefit from the opportunity to learn about historic and current developments of space activities (in South Africa, Germany and the United States of America).

The International Space Weather Camp (ISWC) Background

The International Space Weather Camp (ISWC), formerly Joint Space Weather Summer Camp (JSWSC) was a partnership initially, between DLR, the University of Rostock and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville).

 The collaboration was extended in 2015 with SANSA joining DLR and UAHuntsville in participating and hosting in a trilateral arrangement. 

Application Information

Applicants must take note of the following before applying for The International Space Weather Camp (ISWC):

1. Applicants must be final year BSc Hon/BEng or Masters students in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or Electronics.
2. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents.
3. Successful applicants will be fully funded to participate in the ISWC 2022. Funding will include:

• Data for the virtual part
• Transport
• Accommodation and meals for the second part of the Camp (Provided that the applicant attended all the virtual sessions).

N.B: Kindly note that all successful applicants must be fully vaccinated prior to the start of the camp, as a vaccination certificate will be required as proof.
