SASMT Bursaries

About SASMT Bursaries

South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) was established by a group of music teachers in Cape Town in the year 1918. After one hundred years, it is now the oldest professional audio society around South Africa.

The organization symbolizes music instructors in Faculties, Private training, Music centers, universities, and colleges and it has been doing so since its beginning.

Below are the bursaries offered by SASMT;

1. David Reunert Bursary: This bursary is available for students that want to take up a career in performing or teaching music professionally. The bursary award a sum of R1,5oo for successful applicants.

2. Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship: The Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship is for students that are studying stringed instruments (e.g violin). The value for the bursary is R5,000.

3. Gladwell Scholarship: This is open to students that want to study music – instrumental, composition, or vocal. The recipient of this bursary will be given a sum of R12,000 which will be paid two times to the recipient or institution.

4. Kathleen Irish Scholarship: All financially disadvantaged talented music students can compete for this scholarship. Students that plan to study piano at a tertiary institution can apply. This bursary award-winning value is R12,000.

You should know that the recipient of this bursary will be required to perform at the SASMT Annual General Meeting.

SASMT Bursaries Eligible Field of Study

SASMT Bursaries are available to undergraduates studying music in different Universities or colleges in South Africa.

Eligibility for SASMT Bursaries

Applicants of these SASMT bursaries are expected to meet up some requirements to be qualified. Each bursary has there own requirements. Below are the requirements for each of the SASMT bursaries;

1. David Reunert Bursary

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Ages between 18 and 25
  • Must have a Matric certificate or equivalent
  • Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
  • Intend on teaching or performing music professionally in any of the following; singing/ performing/ teaching/ theoretical branch of music

2. Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship

  • South African citizen
  • Have a Matric certificate or equivalent
  • Ready to study locally or internationally
  • Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
  • Studying stringed instruments, violin in particular

3. Gladwell Scholarship

  • South African citizen
  • Intends to study music locally or internationally, at an institution or teacher approved by the SASMT Council
  • Minimum grade 8 standard of music examining bodies
  • Not above 25 years
  • Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
  • Intend on studying music e.g instrumental, composition, or vocal

4. Kathleen Irish Scholarship

  • Intends to study music locally or internationally, at an institution or teacher approved by the SASMT Council
  • Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
  • Proven financial need
  • Intend on studying piano at a tertiary level

How to Apply for SASMT Bursaries

To apply for the SASMT Bursaries you will have to Application-Form-1 (pdf). There is one application for all the bursaries

Supporting Documents

Applicants must attach the following supporting documents with their application form. Failure to submit all the documents will render your application ineligible;

  • ID document
  • Full academic record to date
  • Matric certificate (or equivalent)
  • Shortened Curriculum Vitae
  • Minimum of 2 referee recommendations (1 from the institution or department head of where you currently study)
  • Recent unedited DVD recording OR a Youtube video, containing at least 3 contrasting works from a minimum of 2 style periods, totaling 15 to 20 minutes. Each piece must be on a separate track. Your name, as well as the name and instrument, must be stated on the DVD – NOT recorded.
  • Teachers declaration that the DVD is of the applicant’s personal performance
  • Electronic photo (approx. 500 px height)

Application Deadline

The closing date for the SASMT Bursaries is 12 October 2021. Application submitted after the closing date will not be considered.
