Application is now open for students that want to apply for the NYDA African Scholar Fund.

The African Scholars Fund is a non-profit organization founded in 1970. ASF aims at providing funds for young school children with good academic records from disadvantaged background complete their secondary or TVET college education.

This fund was done as a result of the partnership between NYDA and the African Scholars Fund. The bursary management will provide financial support for applicants who have academic potential and sense of responsibility.

The bursary will be available for high school candidates and public TVET college applicants. The High School bursary recipients will be given R1000 per year and will be paid through the school. The bursary recipients performance will be monitored and evaluated every mid-year and December. The following areas are entitled to the bursary for high school education: the Free State, Western, Eastern and Northern Cape.

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

High School

  • 50% or above average mark for all subjects
  • Maximum R4500 school fees per year
  • Maximum R7500 total monthly household income
  • Residing or studying within the Free State, Western, Eastern or Northern Cape
  • 21 years old and below in matric year

Public TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) College

  • 50% or above average mark for all subjects
  • 25 years old and below when applying
  • NOT a recipient of any other bursaries
  • Minimum of grade 10 with Maths and Science is required for technical courses
  • Minimum of 50% in all tests and exams and 60% for Orientation courses are required if the applicant is already in college

How to Apply and Application Details

  1. Attach the following documents with your application form:
    • High School:
      • June academic report
      • Household proof of income
      • Letter in own handwriting indicating all your relevant background as well as your family
      • Empty and unsealed self-addressed envelope with stamp
    • TVET:
      • Most recent high school certificate or report
      • Copies of all previous college exam statement of results, if applicable
      • Printout of current CLASS TEST results for applicants already in college
      • Household proof of income
      • Empty and unsealed self-addressed envelope with stamp
      • Letter in own handwriting indicating application motivation and family situation
  2. Send your applications through the post at PO Box 294, Rondebosch 7700. Emailed or faxed applications will be rejected.

Closing Date

  •  15 September for High School 
  •  31 October for 1st trimester/semester 
  •  31 March for 2nd trimester 
  •  31 May for 2nd semester 
  •  31 July for 3rd trimester
