In partnership with Yes4Youth, the Market Theatre Foundation is providing unemployed youth with internship opportunities. This internship is open to youths from previously disadvantaged communities.
This internship will take place for 12 months starting from 1 February 2022 and ending on 31 January 2023.
Internship Value
The Market Theatre Foundation Internship will take place for 12 months and each successful applicant will receive a sum of R5000.00 per month. Recipients will enjoy the opportunity to gain experience at a prestigious and world-renowned cultural institution.
The Market Theatre Foundation Internship has many positions available for the internship. Each intern will work in their field of choice with like minds thereby gaining experience in their field.
Market Theatre Foundation Internship Open Positions
Below are the positions available for interns at the Market Theatre Foundation and their requirements;
STAGE MANAGER
Market Theatre Foundation is in need of two interns to assist the stage manager to ensure effective use of the stage. Interns will ensure the effective use and management of the communication channels between stakeholders.
Requires:
- Degree/Diploma Performing Arts, relevant Theatre Qualifications
- Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment
- Applicants must be able to work under pressure
GENERAL ADMIN ASSISTANT
If you are applying for this role, you must know how to manage the front desk, reception services, attend to visitors and deal with both phone and face to face enquiries. You will also be responsible for supplying information for clients and the general public about the foundation.
Requires:
- Diploma in Office Admin or equivalent
- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures
- Computers and relevant software applications
- Knowledge of customer service principles and practices
- People and communication skills
- Must be able to operate a switchboard
SOUND TECHNICIAN INTERN
This is for youths that have a good knowledge of sound engineering, mixing, sound set up and patching. Interns in this position will work with the Market Theatre’s professional technical production team to assist in staging from the sound perspective.
Requires:
- Degree/Diploma in sound technology/engineering, performing arts
- Sound engineering graduate or previous sound experience.
- Programming cues with a mixing console for shows or events.
- Operating analogue or digital mixing consoles for shows and events.
PRODUCING ADMINISTRATOR
This position is for those that want to gain professional knowledge in theatrical productions. The intern in this position will work in the Producer’s office to assist in production.
Requires:
- Degree/Ndip in Office Administration or equivalent or arts-related qualification
- Applicants will assist Producer and Assistant Producer with the administration of quotations and contracts
- computer literate
- basic accounting, communication, and project management skills
- Assist Production department with the drafting and maintenance of schedules
SOCIAL MEDIA INTERN
This position is for those that are well-tuned when it comes to PR, Social Media, events and content creation to promote Market Theatre Foundation. The intern will work together with the Brand and Communication team to create awareness, publicity and other activities that will promote the organization.
Requires:
- Basic knowledge of campaign management from conceptualisation to execution
- Awareness of the nature and role of theatre and entertainment industries.
- Hands-on experience with social media monitoring
- Ability to interpret social media traffic, impressions, target and audience
- Knowledge of online marketing
- A relevant degree/diploma in Marketing, Brand Communications, Media studies.
PUBLICITY INTERN
Success applicants of this role will work closely with the Senior publicist to assist in writing a media release, conduction research, scheduling PR events and other duties.
Requires:
- Degree/Ndip in public relations, communications/ media studies
- Knowledge of marketing, social media, graphic design, theatre and copywriting.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Basic administrative skills, computer literacy
AUDIENCE & MARKETING DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT
If you are very good at marketing and creating brand awareness, this role is a good fit for you. The intern will work together with the Theatre Foundation’s Brand & Communications team to promote the organization audience base.
This is an opportunity to work hand in hand with a marketing and sales team. You will interact with the public and also educate institutions with the aim of promoting and finding an audience for MTF.
Requires:
- Have a degree in marketing or in a related field of study.
- A minimum of 1-year sales experience
- Have good communication skills
- Target driven
- Be able to cope with rejection.
- Ability to remain calm in fast-paced environments
- Structured individual, with good time management
GRAPHIC DESIGNER INTERN
This role is open for those that have good knowledge in print, digital, web, video to support the marketing department.
Requires
- A degree in Fine/Visual Arts, Communications, Media, or a related field
- knowledge of layouts, typography, line composition, colour, and other graphic design fundamentals
- Good computer skills, preferably MAC
- Experience with InDesign, Illustrator, Adobe Creative Suite, and knowledge of video editing software,
- Strong creative and analytical skills
- Compelling portfolio of graphic design work
RESEARCH AND ARCHIVING x2
Two interns are needed to provide assistance in coordinating the development of archive and research programming for the market photo workshop. You are to provide support for the exhibitions, research, Photo Workshop library.
Requires:
- Applicants must have a tertiary qualification in Humanities (Photography, visual and heritage archives)
- Computer skills (Mac and PC, Excel and Word, E-mail)
- Be driven and passionate about photography
- Knows the importance of archives for South Africa’s future
- Ability to work under pressure, unsupervised and show strong initiative
- Show critical awareness of the nature and role of photography, archives in general, and of the education and development landscape for African practitioners
- Understanding of Arts, Culture and Heritage-related industries will be advantageous
PROJECTS ASSISTANT INTERN
Successful applicants will work with the Market Theatre Foundation project manager in coordinating and achieving project objectives. The intern will also take part in administrative duties.
Requires:
- Tertiary qualification in Humanities
- Computer skills (Mac and PC, Excel and Word, E-mail)
MAINTENANCE INTERN
The intern will be working with Handyman on the maintenance of the organization’s properties.
Requires:
- Grade 12 or equivalent technical qualification.
- Experience with hardware tools and electrical equipment
- Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems
- Basic math skills
- Have good communication skills
- Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety.
HUMAN RESOURCES INTERN
MTF is in need of an HR Intern to assist in administrative tasks, maintaining recording and personnel files, recruitment and planning employee-focused events. If you think you are fit for this position, check the requirements below and apply.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANT INTERN

- Knowledge of sound/ lighting.
