HORTGRO Bursary South Africa 2020 – 2021

The application for HORTGRO bursary is now open for all interested applicants. Everything you need to apply for the HORTGRO bursary is available here.

We can trace the history of HORTGRO back to 1652 when Jan van Riebeeck planted the first apple seed in the Cape of Good Hope. The companies are specialized in research and technology, transformation, production, markets and communication in the deciduous fruit industry.

HORTGRO bursaries are available for South Africa academically deserving students each year. Since the beginning of the bursary programme, HORTGRO has provided over R35 million worth of bursary funding  for students to contribute to the development of the agricultural workforce.

The companies focus on guiding and directing research in the deciduous fruit industry. It also takes care of the industries short term and long term needs, it focus on what will bring development to the industries.

The following are members of HORTGRO:

  • SA Stone Fruit Producers’ Association (SASPA)
  • SA Apple and Pear Producers’ Association (SAAPPA)
  • Dried Fruit Technical Services (DFTS)

FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE

Below is the eligible field of study for the bursary:

  • Agricultural Economics
  • Biochemistry
  • Horticulture
  • Entomology and Nematology
  • Genetics
  • Research and Technical
  • Microbiology
  • Plant Pathology
  • Soil/ Water Science

The bursary will take care of the following student expenses: tuition fees (it has a limited amount), accommodation on tertiary campus and prescribed books (limited amount).
The bursary can be renewed each year based on student academic performance.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To benefit from this programme, applicants must meet the following requirements. Applicants that did not meet the requirements below will not be considered for the bursary.

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have completed Matric OR currently in Matric
  • Studying or intend on studying in one of the above fields
  • Studying or registered to study at a South Africa recognised tertiary institution
  • Applicants must meet the requirements of the course they are applying to

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY

To apply for the bursary, download and complete the HORTGRO Bursary Application Form (.pdf). After completing the application form, applicants are to attach a clear certified copy of the following document.

  • Both sides of your ID Card/ ID document
  • Matric certificate, if applicants have completed Matric
  • Students currently in Matric should submit their latest results Matric result
  • Tertiary institution students are to submit their latest tertiary academic record
  • Proof of tertiary registration on tertiary letterhead)\
  • An estimated breakdown of study fees e.g. tuition, books and accommodation
  • Parents/ guardians ID documents
  • Parents/ guardians proof of income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed)
  • Proof of any other financial assistance, bursaries or loans being received (if applicable)

All the documents above must be attached to your application form before you can be considered for the award.

CLOSING DATE

The closing date for the bursary application is 15 August 2020. Any application submitted later will not be accepted.
