The President of South Africa has ordered on Sunday that all schools be closed and family members should not be allowed to visit prisoners at all correctional facilities across the country due to the recent outbreak of Coronavirus. This decision was made to curb the spread of the virus in the country.
In a statement, Ramaphosa said “Gatherings of more than 100 people will be prohibited. Mass celebrations of upcoming national days such as Human Rights Day and other large government events will be cancelled,”
All universities, colleges and lower institutions are to be closed from Wednesday till after Easter. S far, 61 people have tested positive in the country and there is tendencies that the number will increase drastically in coming weeks is measures are not taken.
Currently, a student at Wits University in Johannesburg has tested positive for the coronavirus.
Ramaphosa said, “The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation is consulting with Vice-Chancellors of universities and colleges across the country and will soon be announcing measures in this regard.” Also, those that have come in contact with the student will also be quarantined.
The global death due to Coronavirus is now more than 5,300 with more than 142,000 cases confirmed. The virus is currently in over 135 countries of the world and has been declared a pandemic diseases by the World Health Organization (WHO).
