Winter Cereal Trust Bursary South Africa 2020 – 2021

Application is now open for students that want to apply for the Winter Cereal Trust (WCT) bursary 2020/2021. The Winter Cereal Trust provides bursaries for eligible students in South Africa.

The Winter Cereal Trust (WCT) started the bursary in 2006 to assist students in the small grains research industry financially. Ten postgraduate students are awarded the bursary each year and three black students in their final year of undergraduate studies or students studying toward their honour degree.

The Winter Cereal Trust (WCT)was established in 1997, it is divided into 2 trusts; the Winter Cereal Research Trust and the Winter Cereal General Trust, each division has a function peculiar to them.

The Winter Cereal Research Trust is concerned with performing research (scientific, industrial and technical research) on winter cereals and protect the interest of South Africa in the industry. While the Winter Cereal General Trust function is to provide funding for the research to aid the production of winter cereal in South Africa. Example of winter cereal are; oats, wheat, rye, barley, durum wheat and triticale.

FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE

Only students studying a course that is relevant to Small Grains Industry are eligible for this bursary. It is available for master and postgraduate students. The value of the bursary depends on the qualification and length of study of the applicants.

  • Undergraduate degrees and Honours degrees: R64 135 per annum (for 1 year)
  • MSc degrees: R77 698 per annum (for 2 years)
  • PhD degrees: R94 965 per annum (for 3 years)

The beneficiary of this award will have access to a Mentor/ Co-Promotor that have good relevant skills in the small grains research field to provide assistance where necessary.

After the completion of the qualification by beneficiaries, they will have to take up employment at the Small Grain Industry for the number of years they collect the bursary.

Bursary recipients will have to attend the 2-day meeting of the Winter Cereal Trust Technical Committee in Pretoria September of each year.

WINTER CEREAL TRUST BURSARY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet the following requirements to benefit from this program.

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Black student (Coloured, Indian or African)
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards a Masters or Doctoral qualification
  • Students studying in a field related to the Small Grains Industry
  • Thesis topic to be approved by the Winter Cereal Trust
  • Mentor and Co-Promotor to be selected – to be approved by the WCT and university where studies will take place

  • Applicants qualification certificates
  • Passport-sized colour photograph
  • Full Curriculum Vitae
  • Mentor’s letter of support
  • Mentor’s motivation letter for your research project
  • Research proposal for a research project
  • A Motivational letter indicating why your research proposal will be valuable to the Small Grains Industry
  • Co-Promotor’s letter of support
