The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) is a recognized one-year intensive programme, where a select group of 25–30 outstanding students spends six months in Pretoria and another six months at one of the twelve partner universities across Africa. They receive instruction from distinguished human rights lecturers and participate in several hands-on training exercises.

In Africa, it is the only course of its kind. Graduates join the HRDA Alumni Association, whose 537 members are presently engaged in a range of human rights activities, from grassroots efforts to civil service positions to involvement with international institutions like the United Nations and the African Union. The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa, is inviting applicants from all African nations to apply for admission to study for a Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa.

The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa is a unique programme that admits 25 to 30 African countries with the following degrees and, ideally, prior experience in the field of human rights:

  • Law students: A degree (such as an LLB or license en droit) that grants admission to the legal profession
  • For other students (not law students): a minimum of an honours degree in a field related to democratization and human rights

They study under distinguished human rights lecturers for a year, during which they receive crucial hands-on training. In Africa, it is the only course of its kind.
