Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in many parts of the world with South Africa included. This article is to give an update on the University of Limpopo, UL closure and opening date.
On March 15, 2020, the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has declared the Coronavirus as a national disaster and calls on the closure of all schools and correctional facilities to curb the spread of the deadly virus. Also, a ban has also been placed on international travel, limitation on domestic travel and gathering of more than 100 people.
In order to help fight the spread of this disease, the University of Limpopo and all South Africa universities have suspended all activities indefinitely.
CORONAVIRUS: LATEST UPDATES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LIMPOPO (UL)
The University of Limpopo, UL together with other institutions in South Africa and across the globe, acknowledged the fact that closing down is of great importance during this difficult time. The university has to send her students home to help stop the spread of the virus despite the university does not have a case yet.
Here are the situations in UL:
- UL has not recorded any case of coronavirus yet.
- All trip abroad by the students and staffs has been cancelled.
- They have suspended all exchange programs involving staff and students. Interactions with provincial and national governments
- A protocol regarding the virus was established by the national government. PLEASE ensure UL is vigilant with respect to messages communicated via other channels.

- Limpopo Government is issuing pamphlets through the Department of Health to guide the University’s day-to-day security issues related to the virus. In order for UL to be in compliance with the Protocols due to the latest developments, the university has resolved to the followings:
- Suspend all the academic contact activities until further notice. ALL students, including University residences, should vacate the campus. The University will be finalizing its contingency plans during this time period. All official communication platforms at the University will be used to keep you updated.
- Meanwhile, all university staff will continue to report for work as UL continues to engage at the sector level to have a coordinated response that aligns with national protocols and complies with them. Precautionary measures should always be observed.
