UNIVERSITY OF FORT HARE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Below is all the minimum admission requirement students must meet to gain admission into UFH.

GENERAL ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

These are the requirements all students applying to UFH must have irrespective of the course applying to:

  • A Matriculation Certificate, a National Senior Certificate, a School Leaving Certificate or a Further Education and Training (FET 4) Certificate; or
  • Mature age, Senate discretionary or any other form of conditional or complete exemption; or
  • Any other qualification, examination or experience (prior learning and/or experience) that is recognized in terms of the admission policy of the University as laid down by Council in consultation with Senate; provided that Council in consultation with Senate may further prescribe by regulation additional requirements as it deems fit as a prerequisite for admission to any specific programme.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR’S DEGREES
  • Minimum of level 4 in English 1st Additional Language or
  • Minimum of level 3 in English Home Language.
  • Minimum of Level 4 or better in four 20-credit subjects from the designated list, excluding Life Orientation.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR MATURE AGE APPLICANTS

Mature age applicants (turning 23 years during the year of registration), who have met the requirements in bullets 1 – 3 above, qualify for admission to mainstream programmes. They need to apply for conditional exemption from HESA. Designated Subjects

Applicants who wish to enrol for a degree programme need to ensure that four of their seven subjects are from the designated list.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Certificate (pre-2008)

A candidate is expected to possess a minimum level of proficiency in the English language. A pass mark of at least E symbol on SG is considered to be sufficient. A pass mark of at least an F symbol on HG English 1st language is also considered to be sufficient.

A Matriculation Exemption or Further Education and Training Certificate.

A standard qualification to study for a degree is a Matriculation endorsement or equivalent.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE (VOCATIONAL) (NCV) GUIDELINES

The minimum admission requirement expected of students to a Bachelor’s degree programme is a National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 issued by the Council for General and Further Education and Training. Below are the minimum admission requirements to a Bachelor’s degree include the achievement of the following,

  • National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4;
  • At least three (3) fundamental subjects with a minimum pass mark of 60% (including English as the language of learning)
  • Three (3) vocational subjects from the designated list between 70 ‐ 79% (4).

Students are also required to meet specified faculty NVC admission criteria. This is determined by each Faculty Boards.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANT WITH FOREIGN SCHOOL-LEAVING
Undergraduate

Applicants that do not have South Africa school leaving certificate requires a certificate of exemption from the Matriculation Board of South Africa for admission into an undergraduate qualification. The University of Fort Hare will also submit applications to the Matriculation Board on behalf of all applicants after submitting the following:

Form M30E (which is also available from the matriculation board website); a copy of educational qualification (certified at the University); a  copy of Passport or birth certificate (certified at the University); Exemption application fee charged at R400.00 (payable at the university); and Sworn English translation of documents required where applicable.

Postgraduate

All applicants with non-South African qualifications are required to have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). For more information regarding evaluation of qualifications please visit the SAQA website: www.saqa.org.za

Student selection and admissions process
  • Students receive application forms from the Students Registration Office through the post/contact.
  • These are completed and returned to the Students Registration Office and get sorted per-Faculty.
  • Then the faculty selection committee (Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning, Faculty Manager, HODs and Administrators) convenes to do the selection.
  • Admission is done on merit, using the Swedish point system. High scores are considered first in chronological order

UNIVERSITY OF FORT HARE POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Postgraduate Diplomas Requirements

  • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree  OR
  • Attained a level of competence
  • Some Schools/College may accept and Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF  (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.

Duration

  • A minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. Except with the permission of Senate all modules shall be completed at the University.

Curriculum

  • The curriculum will contain advanced reflection, practice and research methods in the area of specialization and may include a sustained research project in accordance with College rules approved by Senate.

Bachelor of Honours Degrees Requirements

  • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree OR
  • Attained a level of competence

Duration

  • A minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. Except with the permission of Senate all modules shall be completed at the University.

Curriculum: The curriculum for the Honours degree shall include a prescribed research project as one of the modules which shall account for a minimum of 25% of the credits for the degree. Masters by Coursework and Masters by Research Requirements

  • A relevant prerequisite degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree OR
  • Attained a level of competence

Duration Coursework

  • A minimum of two consecutive semesters (full time) or 4 consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.
  • With permission and in terms of College regulations, periods of attendance at the graduate level at another institution or in another College may be accepted. (Consult with relevant School).

Research

  • A minimum of two consecutive semesters (full time) or 4 consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.

Research

  • Candidates shall be required to pursue an appropriate programme of research on a subject on a subject falling within the scope of the studies presented at the University. Students must also adhere to possible other conditions prescribed by Colleges/Schools.

Doctor of philosophy or supervised Doctor degrees by research 

Requirements

  • A relevant prerequisite degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree

Duration

  • A minimum of four consecutive semesters (full time) or eight consecutive semester (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.

Curriculum

  • Students will be required to pursue an approved programme of research on a subject falling within the scope of studies at the University. Such a programme shall make a distinct contribution to the knowledge or understanding of the subject and afford evidence of originality shown either by the discovery of new facts and by the exercise of independent critical power. Students must also adhere to other possible conditions prescribed by Colleges/Schools.
