DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
Below are the requirements applicants must meet before they can be considered for admission at the Durban University of Technology, DUT.
- A Senior Certificate is the minimum entrance requirement for South Africans seeking admission to the DUT. Also, a recognized equivalent qualification can be used in place of it. Apart from the requirement above, each department also has its own requirements.
- Since January 2007, the following are DUT admission requirements :
- a National Senior Certificate (NSC) that is certified by Umalusi Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training provided that applicants must pass a minimum of 4 recognised NSC 20-credit subjects.
- The subject passed must include:
- English with an achievement rating of 3 or better.
- No exceed 2 official languages.
- With an achievement rating of 3 or better, in accordance with the NSC levels of achievement below:

Minimum Admission Requirements for Admission for NVC Level 4
For Higher Certificate:
A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with at least 50% in English
For Diploma
A National Certificate (Vocational) and the following requirements
- At least 50% in three fundamental subjects including English
- At least 60% in four compulsory vocational subjects
For Bachelor’s Degree
A National Certificate (Vocational) and the following requirements
- At least 60% in three fundamental subjects including English
- At least 70% in four compulsory vocational subjects, chosen from the national certificate (Vocational) Level 4

DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
Postgraduate Diplomas Requirements
All students applying for postgraduate admission are to meet the following requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree OR
- Admission to the status of that degree OR
- Attained a level of competence
- Some Schools/Colleges may accept an Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.
Duration
- All successful applicants must complete a minimum of at least two consecutive semesters, except with the permission of the Senate all modules shall be completed at the University.
Curriculum
- The curriculum will contain advanced reflection, practice and research methods in the area of specialization and may include a sustained research project in accordance with College rules approved by Senate.
Bachelor of Honours Degrees Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree OR
- Admission to the status of that degree OR
- Attained a level of competence
Duration
- All successful applicants must complete a minimum of at least two consecutive semesters, except with the permission of the Senate all modules shall be completed at the University.
Curriculum
- The curriculum for the Honours degree shall include a prescribed research project as one of the modules which shall account for a minimum of 25% of the credits for the degree. Masters by Coursework and Masters by

- Admission to the status of that degree OR
- Attained a level of competence
Duration Coursework
- A minimum of two consecutive semesters (full time) or 4 consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.
- With permission and in terms of College regulations, periods of attendance at the graduate level at another institution or in another College may be accepted. (Consult with relevant School).
Research
- A minimum of two consecutive semesters (full time) or 4 consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.
Research
- Candidates shall be required to pursue an appropriate programme of research on a subject on a subject falling within the scope of the studies presented at the University. Students must also adhere to possible other conditions prescribed by Colleges/Schools.
Doctor of philosophy or supervised Doctor degrees by research
Requirements
- A relevant prerequisite degree OR
- Admission to the status of that degree
Duration
- A minimum of four consecutive semesters (full time) or eight consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.
Curriculum
- Students will be required to pursue an approved programme of research on a subject falling within the scope of studies at the University. Such a programme shall make a distinct contribution to the knowledge or understanding of the subject and afford evidence of originality shown either by the discovery of new facts or by the exercise of independent critical power. Students must also adhere to other possible conditions prescribed by Colleges/Schools.
