The management of the Department of Water and Sanitation Bursary is calling on South African students to apply for the 2022 bursary. The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) was established in 1912 as the Department of Irrigation.
The DWS is one of South African Government Department, it is responsible for the water resources of the country, especially for the formulation and implementation of policies within the sector.
The department ensures that all South Africa citizen have access to clean water and sanitation services. They also ensure there is resources management to provide sustainable economic and social development in South Africa.
FIELDS COVERED
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has a Learning Academy that provides help for students to complete their tertiary education in the water and sanitation field. The water and sanitation field is a rare skills sector in the country.
The Department of Water and Sanitation Bursary is for students in the following field of study;
Undergraduate:
- Civil Engineering (BSc/ BEng/ BEng Tech/ National Diploma)
- Electrical Engineering (BSc/ BEng/ BEng Tech/ National Diploma)
- Mechanical Engineering (BSc/ BEng/ BEng Tech/ National Diploma)
- Hydrology (BSc)
- Geohydrology (BSc)
- Project Management (BSc)
- Environmental Management (BSc)
- Environmental Sciences (BSc)
- Environmental and Water Sciences (BSc)
- Water Care (National Diploma)
- Environmental Management (National Diploma)
- Biochemistry (National Diploma)
Postgraduate:

Department of Water and Sanitation Bursary Value
The bursary is awarded to eligible students every year and it can be renewed based on the academic performance of the recipient. The bursary will take care of the following:
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees
- Allowance for prescribed textbooks
- Accommodation
- Meals and a personal allowance.
After the recipients have completed their study, they are expected to join the Water Learning Academy for up to three years.
The DWS bursary board will contact shortlisted candidates via written correspondence. If you did not receive any message within three months of the application deadline, consider your application void.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants of this bursary must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the bursary:
- South African citizen
- Completed Matric OR currently in Matric
- Studying or intend on studying full time within one of the aforementioned fields of study
- Studying or intend on studying at one of the tertiary institutes listed below
- Strong academic record
- Proven financial need
- Students with disability can apply
Note: Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged students from poor and rural communities

Together with your application form, make sure you attached all of the following supporting documents that are applicable to you. Failure to attach certified copy of all the documents will make your application ineligible:
- ID document
- Grade 11 final results AND Matric latest results, if currently in Matric
- Matric certificate, if completed Matric
- Full tertiary academic record to date, if currently at University
- Proof of University application/ firm offer/ provisional acceptance letter, if a new student
- Parents/ guardians proof of income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed/ SASSA grant letter)
