The UCT Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Virtual Competition transcends the ordinary, showcasing the vibrant research community at UCT. Slated for the 28th of September 2023 as an online event, this competition presents an exceptional avenue for Masters and PhD candidates to unveil their research journeys and findings to a broader audience. The ultimate challenge? Presenting their research effectively within a mere three-minute timeframe.
Rooted in an international concept, the 3MT competition encourages students to present their ideas and discoveries in a way that captivates even those unfamiliar with the subject matter, all compressed into a succinct 180 seconds.
Eligibility for the 3MT Online Competition:
- Participants must be currently enrolled as Masters or PhD students at UCT.
- Candidates should have reached a stage in their research where they possess tangible findings to share.
- Those with a drive to push their boundaries, refine their presentation aptitude, and gain recognition for their research are strongly encouraged to partake.
Process for the 3MT Online Competition: Optional Preparatory Workshops: To aid participants in mastering the art of clear and concise presentations, UCT has organized two voluntary preparatory workshops:
- “Navigating the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition”: Scheduled for the 22nd of August.
- “Crafting a Compelling Three-Minute Presentation (3MT) – Encore”: Originally planned for the 25th of August, rescheduled to the 24th of August due to scheduling conflicts.
- Registration for the 3MT Competition: After preparing adequately, participants can proceed to register for the main event. Registration is imperative, with only 81 available slots. To secure a place in the UCT 3MT Competition, begin the registration process here.
- Presentation and Competition: Selected participants will deliver their research presentations online on the 28th of September 2023, running from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Exceptional presentations will be duly recognized and rewarded.

- Preparatory Workshop 2 (Rescheduled): 24th of August 2023
- Deadline for 3MT Competition Registration: 30th of August 2023, by midday.
- 3MT Competition Date: 28th of September 2023, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Promising rewards await the most outstanding presentations in both the Masters and PhD categories, with winners in the PhD division progressing to the National 3MT Virtual Competition. Prizes for the national level competition range from R11,000 to R16,000.
