The management of the Mining Qualifications Authority, MQA Bursary is inviting all eligible interested applicants to apply for the 2022 bursary. This bursary is for students that intend to or currently studying towards a degree and diploma programme in any of the eligible fields of study.

The aim of the MQA bursary is to increase the number of students taking careers in the mining and minerals sector. This bursary offers a funding opportunity to students that want to study in the mining and minerals sector at Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges.

The MQA bursary is for students that have enrolled with universities, Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, and universities of technology.

The MQA bursary scheme will take care of student full tuition and registration fees; residence fees or out of residence living costs; books; stationery; and toolkit allowance per bursar per semester.

MINING QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY, MQA BURSARY ELIGIBILITY

Below are the eligibility requirements for the MQA Bursary scheme. Applicants are to make sure they meet the requirements below:

The Bursary is open to deserving South African Citizens as follows:

Unemployed individuals:

This bursary is open to students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds with excellent academic records. This bursary will give special recognition for female students, applicants living in the rural areas and those that applied to study at their local tertiary institution.

The MQS bursary is based on the student’s academic performance and it will be rewarded to the recipients every year where the student is enrolled but will be re-assessed by the MQA.

Employed individuals:

Those that are already employed in the mining and minerals industry but still want to pursue studies in a field in mining-related fields can also apply for this funding.

The MQA bursary will provide full tuition fee payment and books allowance which will be paid per semester for employed recipients.

Eligible Field of Study

Below you will find the eligible field of study for both the unemployed and employed applicants of this bursary. Funding will be provided for students at universities and universities of technology in any of the following fields of study.:

  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Jewellery Design Manufacturing
  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering
  • Geology
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Occupational Hygiene
  • Mine Surveying
  • Occupational Medicine
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Operations Management
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Quality Management
  • Environmental Health and Management

The MQA bursary is available for the following education levels associated with the above discipline: Undergraduate Degree, B Tech, Honours Degree, Master’s Degree and Doctoral Degree.

The MQA bursary scheme only funds the following qualifications at TVET colleges:

  • Boilermaker
  • Fitting (incl: Machinery)
  • Motor Mechanic (Diesel)
  • Instrumentation Mechanic
  • Electrician
  • Millwright
  • Fitter and Turner
  • Rigger Ropesman

The MQA may annually consider 20% of the award to be given to deserving unemployed and employed bursary applicants to study qualifications outside the list of eligible fields of study above.

HOW TO APPLY FOR MINING QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY BURSARY

The MQA bursary does open every year between August/September, you can download the application form from the website and email the application form after filling it completely and attach all the supporting documents to the email address provided.

All successful applicants will be advised on the outcome of their bursary application by the end of November of their application year.

CLOSING DATE

The MQA bursary application closing date has not been announced yet. Make sure you submit your application on time.
