JB Marks Education Trust Fund Bursary South Africa 2020 – 2021

Application isnow open for students that want to apply for the JB Marks Trust Fund Bursary. This post contains all you need to apply for the bursary successfully.

The JB Marks Education Trust Fund bursary will be given to 200 prospective undergraduate students and 50 postgraduate students every year. This bursary is available to all National Union of Mineworkers members and their dependents (including children and spouses).

The Trust Fund was establihed in 1997 by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), it aimed at empowering NUM members and dependents of NUM members, especifically for studying towards qualifications in the construction, mining and energy sectors.

JB Marks Trust Fund Bursary

The Trust was named after John Beaver Marks who is a South African activist, leader and a believer in empowerment and emancipation for workers through education. This bursary will fund education expenses of members or members dependant. It has award more than 1000 bursaries since its establishment, spending over R280 million.

Majority of the trust fund is received from the Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT) through Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC) dividends.

COVERAGE VALUE & SELECTION

Successdful applicants of this bursary will be informed with an acceptance letter through delivery or email and to all NMU branches. Any applicant that did not receive anything by 31 December 2020 should check their Regional Office if their name is on the list of successful applicants. If your name is not on the list and you did not receivr any acceptance ;etter then your application is not successful.

The value of bursary awarded is based n the course of study and case to case approach.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants of this bursary must meet the following criteria to be eligible to benefit from the bursary:

Undergraduate students:

  • NUM members OR dependent of a NUM member, it might be children orspouses
  • Studying towards an undergraduate degree
  • Applicants must be studying at a recognised tertiary institute (University or FET College,  No private institutes)
  • NOT currently in recipient of any other funding

Postgraduate students:

  • Must have graduated as JB Marks beneficiary
  • Graduated for not less than 2 years
  • Studying within the qualified field of study

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY

Undergraduate students:

You are to submit a clear certified copy of the following documents together with your online application form:

  • ID document
  • NUM member or officials ID document
  • NUM member or official’s latest payslip
  • Last academic school results
  • Acceptance letter to show that the applicants is accepted to an institution
  • If the applicants surname is different from the NUM, the applicants can submit any of the following to serve as proof of dependancy:  Medical Aid Beneficiary Certificate/ Marriage Certificate/Abridged Birth Certificate/ Clinic Immunization Card/ Magistrate Guardianship letter

Note: Email application is not allowed for undergraduate applicants

Postgraduate students:

You are to submit a clear certified copy of the following documents together with your online application form:

  • Motivational letter not more than maximum 1000 words
  • Full academic record

CLOSING DATE

The closing date for the underggraduate application is 1st of July, 2020 while postgraduate application deadline is November 2020 and the application will open on August 2020. Any application submitted later than the closing date will not be accepted for consideration.
